What is cardiovascular surgery?
Cardiovascular surgery includes operations involving the heart and blood vessels including arteries and veins. Specially trained surgeons operate on the cardiovascular system using techniques to safely access and treat the surrounding organs and tissue. Often times, procedures are performed to repair damage that may be caused by certain diseases and disorders of the cardiovascular system. Typical procedures are sometimes called heart surgery or cardiac surgery which may include heart valve repair, heart defect repair, heart valve replacement, coronary artery bypass, ventricular assist devices (VADs) and more.
What type of conditions are treated by a cardiovascular surgeon?
- Congestive heart failure
- Coronary artery disease
- Valvular stenosis
- Atrial fibrillation
- Aortic aneurysms dissection
- Aorta transaction
- Left ventricular aneurysm
Minimally invasive valve surgery:
- Aortic valve via right anterior thoracotomy “NYU approach”
- Mitral valve via right lateral thoracotomy “NYU approach”
- Complex mitral valve repair/replacement (including leaflet resection and neo-cord use)
- Aortic valve repair/replacement
- Minimally invasive LIMA to LAD coronary artery bypass surgery
- Coronary artery bypass surgery (Off pump or “beating heart”)
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) evaluation
- Surgical correction of atrial fibrillation (Cox-Maze Procedure)
- Surgical correction of Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy or “HOCM” (Septal Myomectomy)
What is thoracic surgery?
Thoracic surgery, also known as chest surgery includes the organs, structures and tissue that form and support the chest cavity. These organs can include the; heart, lungs, rib cage, breastbone as well as the esophagus and trachea. A specially trained doctor called a thoracic surgeon will perform the surgeries and procedures to treat and manage diseases and injuries to these organs.
What type of conditions are treated by a thoracic surgeon?
- Malignant cancer and tumors including lung and esophageal cancer
- Benign (noncancerous) lung diseases and tumors
- Chest reconstruction
- Trachael resection
- Emphysema
- Mesothelioma
Robotically assisted/minimally invasive thoracic surgery including:
- Lobectomy, including video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and robotically assisted surgery
- Wedge resection of the lung
- Decortication/pleurodesis
Esophageal Surgery:
- Ivor-Lewis esophagogastrectomy
- Heller myotomy for achalasia
- Diverticulectomy
Miscellaneous thoracic procedures:
- Bronchial thermoplasty
- First rib resection for thoracic outlet syndrome
- Thoracic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis
Diagnostic thoracic procedures including:
- Fiberoptic and rigid bronchoscopy
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
- Video-assisted cervical mediastinoscopy
Vascular Surgery:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair (Open and endovascular approach)
- Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) repair
- Carotid endarterectomy surgery
- Peripheral arterial bypass surgery (Aortobifemoral bypass, Femoral popliteal, etc)
- Dialysis access surgery (AV fistula creation/ AV graft insertion)
