Recently, MountainView Hospital announced the first robot-assisted esophagectomy performed at the facility. This surgical procedure is not only a first in Las Vegas but also the state of Nevada. An esophagectomy is a complex procedure performed to treat advanced esophageal cancer requiring a portion of the esophagus to be surgically removed. Also referred to as a robotically assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy, the procedure was performed by Drs. Arnold Chung and Matthew Selleck, both on staff at MountainView Hospital and specially trained on the robotic system.
Arnold Chung, MD, board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery and the Medical Director of Thoracic Surgery along with Matthew Selleck, DO, FACS, FSSO, double board-certified in General Surgery and Complex General Surgical Oncology are both highly trained in their fields and specialize in robotic surgery at MountainView Hospital.
“For patients receiving a cancer diagnosis and requiring treatment or surgery, it’s important to provide exceptional patient care close to home,” said Dr. Selleck. “This gives our patients a better opportunity to recover with family and loved ones nearby, without the burden of travelling out of state as they continue their fight against cancer,” said Dr. Selleck.
By continuing to elevate and expand the medical offering to Southern Nevada and providing advanced services, our number one goal is to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients,” said Dr. Chung. “We are excited to be a leader in minimally-invasive and robotic procedures in the Valley, “said Dr. Chung.
Access to care is important for all cancer patients in the community. MountainView Hospital offers a full spectrum of oncology services for many complex and advanced cancers. This includes other services only offered in Nevada at MountainView Hospital, such as a complex abdominal surgery calledcytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) as well as a renowned Bone Marrow Transplant clinic.
Robotic procedures at MountainView Hospital are performed by specially-trained surgeons. By using their medical expertise, these surgeons guide robots that enhance the precision, stability and visualization of the procedure. The robots provide a clear and steady view of the surgical field giving the physician more control. Robotic surgeries offer a number of benefits to patients including smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery time and shorter hospital stays.
Both Dr. Arnold Chung and Dr. Matthew Selleck’s outpatient clinics are located on the campus of MountainView Hospital. Dr. Chung practices at MountainView Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery Associates. Dr. Selleck practices at Las Vegas Complex Surgical Specialists. Both physicians and their practices are part of HCA Healthcare.
